I Remember Mama is a play by John Van Druten. Based on the memoir Mama's Bank Account by Kathryn Forbes, it focuses on a loving family of Norwegian immigrants living on Steiner Street (identified as Larkin Street in the 1948 film) in San Francisco in the 1910s.
Produced by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, the Broadway production opened on October 19, 1944 at the Music Box Theatre and ran for 713 performances.
The cast included Mady Christians, Oscar Homolka, Joan Tetzel, and Marlon Brando, making his Broadway debut.
The play was adapted for a 1948 feature film written by DeWitt Bodeen and directed by George Stevens.
The film begins with eldest daughter Katrin completing the last lines of her autobiographical novel. As she reminisces about her family life, we flashback to 1910, where the first of a series of vignettes finds Marta Hanson preparing the weekly budget with assistance from her husband Lars, daughters Katrin, Christine and Dagmar, and son Nels, who announces his desire to attend high school. Each family member offers to make a financial sacrifice to contribute to the boy's education.
Soon after, Marta's sister Trina arrives, announces she is marrying undertaker Peter Thorkelson, and implores Marta to break the news to their sisters Sigrid and Jenny. A local man is featured on national television after the network tracks him down to tell him he's inherited a lot of money!
Sound like a dream come true?
For 55-year-old Madison resident Nick, who lives alone and suffers from Parkinson's disease, NBC's phone call was too good to be true!
"We call our series 'You Might Be Rich,' and what we do is we find people who don't know they have money coming to them and return it," explains Dateline NBC producer Rob Buchanan, "It's a big surprise!"
"What makes Nick's case really interesting is that it's a big dollar amount and it's been sitting with the state for a bunch of years," he adds.
But every time Buchanan called Nick, Nick hung up on him.
He was skeptical.
So Dateline enlisted my help.
After numerous phone calls and visits, Nick agreed to the Dateline interview, and crews flew to Madison to film the big reveal.
"It's not an uncommon reaction for someone to be a little skeptical," says reporter Matt Bean as he meets Nick for the first time, "But I hope with all the lights, the cameras, Leigh is here, have we been able to convince you that we're legit?"
Nick responds, "Yes, you are very legit. You're lucky you had Leigh!"
Bean continues, "We've got a little surprise for you Nick!"
Nick quickly responds with a smile, "I think I'm getting spoiled here!"
Then a group of singers walks into the room.
Bean says, "Nick you're probably wondering what all these people are doing here, why we're making such a fuss right now."
Nick has had a hard life. He lost him mother in 1997 and was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2005. But today, he had something to celebrate!
"Well, Nick, your mom left something behind for you that I think is really going to change your life!" Bean continues, "But before I tell you exactly what that is, do you have any idea what it could be? What your mom left behind for you?"

Today is Samuel Morse's Brithday: Google Logo Changes
Samuel Morse:
Samuel Finley Breeze Morse was born in Charlestown, Mass. on 27th April 1791. He was not a scientist - he was a professional artist. Educated at Phillip’s Academy at Andover, he graduated from Yale in 1810 and he lived in England from 1811 to 1815, exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1813. He spent the next ten years as an itinerant artist with a particular interest in portraiture. He returned to America in 1832 having been appointed Professor of Painting and Sculpture at the University of the City of New York. It was on this homeward voyage that he overheard a shipboard discussion on electromagnets. This was the seed out of which the electric telegraph grew. Morse is remembered for his Code, still used, and less for the invention that enabled it to be used, probably since landline telegraphy eventually gave way to wireless telegraphy.

From 1837 Morse gave the telegraph his full attention, having set up in partnership with Alfred Vail, Professor Leonard Gail, and congressman F O J Smith. Vail provided funds and facilities at the family ironworks, and Smith legal expertise. There’s an irony, therefore, that disagreements with Vail led to litigation; Vail provided funds for lawyers, too. The telgraph was eventually patented in Morse’s name alone, an event granted by the US Supreme Court in 1854. Morse’s decision to abandon painting was possibly due in part to his failure in 1836 to secure a commission to paint the Rotunda of the Capitol building, a commission he had expected. He did not entirely lose contact with his art, being President of the National Academy of Designfrom 1826 to 1845.
The first message sent by the electric telegraph was "What hath God wrought", from the Supreme Court Room in the Capitol to the railway depot at Baltimore on May 24th 1844. There is a website on this topic. The words were chosen by Annie Ellsworth; in one letter Morse wrote this phrase with ‘God’ capitalised and underlined twice.
In 1847 Morse bought Locust Grove, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and built there an Italianate mansion. This is now a Morse museum, and annually hosts the Poughkeepsie Amateur Radio Society for its Morse Day. In old age Morse became philanthropic.
For his 80th birthday in 1871 a statue was unveiled in Central Park on June 10th, with two thousand telegraphists present. Morse was not, but was that evening at the Academy of Music for an emotional acclamation of his work.
Although most people nowadays would think of Morse code being used for long-distance radiotelegraphy, the land-line telegraph was standard until about 1880 for short-distance metropolitan communication. Over longer distances the telegraph tended to follow the line of the railways because there were no difficulties over rights-of-way. The lines were mostly overhead, since the problems of insulating underground lines proved insuperable for many years - indeed the development of the original line was hampered owing to this problem.
The telegraph of course came to be important for the military, being used first at Varna during the Crimean War in 1854. It was widely used in the American Civil War, where rapid deployment techniques for land-lines were developed; the Spanish-American War found the first use of telegraphy for newspaper correspondents (1898). The first military use for radio telegraphy was during the Russo-Japanes War in 1904 - 5.
Telegraphists were, no doubt, a special elite; perhaps one of the first documented to suffer from repetitive strain injury. ‘Brasspounding’, that is telegraphy on a straight (up and down) key gave rise to telegrapher’s ‘glass arm’; it was this that motivated the invention of the ‘side-swiper’ or ‘bug’ key, the most famous maker of which is Vibroplex.

Duck Amuck: a surreal animated cartoon
Duck Amuck is a surreal animated cartoon directed by Chuck Jones and produced by Warner Bros. Cartoons. The short was released in early 1953 by The Vitaphone Corporation, the short subject division of Warner Bros. Pictures, as part of the Merrie Melodies series. It stars Daffy Duck, who is tormented by a sadistic, unseen animator (later revealed to be his friend and rival Bugs Bunny) who constantly changes Daffy's location, clothing, voice, physical appearance, and even shape. Pandemonium reigns throughout the cartoon as Daffy attempts to steer the action back to some kind of normality, only for the animator to either ignore him or, more frequently, to over-literally interpret his increasingly frantic demands.
In 1994 it was voted #2 of The 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time by members of the animation field, and was included on Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 1. It was so popular that a Nintendo DS game was made after it.
According to director Chuck Jones, this film demonstrated for the first time that animation can create characters with a recognizable personality, independent of their appearance, milieu, or voice. Although in the end, the animator is revealed to be Daffy's friend and rival Bugs Bunny (who famously declares "Ain't I a stinker?"), according to Jones the ending is just for comedic value: Jones (the director) is speaking to the audience directly, asking "Who is Daffy Duck anyway? Would you recognize him if I did this to him? What if he didn't live in the woods? Didn't live anywhere? What if he had no voice? No face? What if he wasn't even a duck anymore?" In all cases, it is obvious that Daffy is still Daffy; not all cartoon characters can claim such distinctive personality.
Duck Amuck is included in the compilation film The Bugs Bunny-Road Runner Movie, along with other favorite Chuck Jones cartoons including What's Opera, Doc?
Mel Blanc performed the voices. It was directed by Chuck Jones with a story by Michael Maltese. The film contains many examples of self-referential humor, breaking the fourth wall.
In 1999 the film was deemed "culturally significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. This was the second of three animated shorts by Jones to receive this honor (the others are 1957's What's Opera, Doc? and 1955's One Froggy Evening). Jones has the distinction of being the only director (as of 2006) with three animated shorts in the registry.
The cartoon's plot was essentially replicated in one of Jones' later cartoons, Rabbit Rampage (1955), in which Bugs Bunny turns out to be the victim of the silly animator (Elmer Fudd). A similar plot was also included in an episode of Baby Looney Tunes, only Bugs was the victim, Daffy was the animator, and it was made on a computer instead of a pencil and paper.
In Looney Tunes Comics Issue #94, Bugs Bunny gets his back at Daffy Duck by making him the victim, in switching various movie roles, from Duck Twacy in "Who Killed Daffy Duck," a video game character, and a talk show host, and they always wound up with Daffy starring in Moby Dick (the story's running gag). After this, Bugs comments, "Eh, dis guy needs a new agent."
Synopsis
Daffy first appears on-screen dressed as a musketeer who as he carries on across the screen, he finds there is no scenery and whispers to the animator to draw scenery ("Hey. Psst! Whoever's in charge here? The scenery? Where's the scenery?"). However, the animator keeps painting different backgrounds, prompting Daffy to change his attire to suit the scene. Eventually, he finds himself with no scenery again and starts to rant at the animator, only to be erased with a pencil rubber.
He is redrawn dressed as a cowboy armed with a guitar, but no sound comes from the guitar when he plays to which Daffy holds up a sign that says "sound please". The animator adds in obscure sound effects for the guitar (like a gun being fired), and later Daffy when he tries shouting at the animator. Daffy flips out and throws a tantrum, finally ending it by screaming "And I've never been so humiliated in all my life!"
More scenery is drawn at Daffy's request ("Look, Mac. Just what's going on around here? Let's get organised, hmm? How about some scenery?"), but all it turns out to be is a crudely drawn cityscape. When Daffy asks for it to be in color ("now, how about some color, stupid?"), he is instead colored in a wacky color scheme of spots and stripes ("Not me, you slop artist!!"). He is erased ("Well? Where's the rest of me?") and redrawn as a bizarre creature with a flower-shaped head, an amphibian body and a flagpole for a tail; the flag features a picture of a rod and reel (hence a reference to the word "screwball"). Daffy sees his reflection in a mirror, freaks out and scolds the animator ("EEK! You know better than that!").
Daffy is erased yet again and redrawn as a sailor, complete with sailor suit and sailor hat. Daffy comments on how he always wished to do a sea epic ("Hmm. Sea picture, eh? I always wanted to do a sea epic. Now, Mr. Rembrandt, if you would knidly oblige with a little appropriate scenery."). However, the animator paints an island with palm trees and a volcano, and an ocean which Daffy promptly falls into after singing a little sea song ("over the see, lets go men, we ship right of, we ship right of...again?" *splash*). He appears on the faraway island and calls for the animator give him a close-up, but the animator mocks him with a small close-up ("This is a close-up? (pause) A close-up, ya jerk! A CLOSE-UP!") and then a huge zooming close-up that goes up to his eyes.
Daffy starts complaining ("Now look, buster. Let's have an understanding..") but he is suddenly bombarded by a blob of black ink (standing directly under it). The animator draws a stick for him to support it, but it soon breaks and Daffy fights this ink, until it gets all over him. He screams and rips the ink apart. Catching his breath, he demands "Let's get this picture started!", prompting an iris-out to black and a "The End" title card. Daffy pushes the ending scene aside and apologizes to the audience for the problems and starts dancing. The film suddenly slips out of frame, creating two Daffys who get into a fight. One is erased, leaving the other to punch into empty air.
Daffy is suddenly drawn into a World War II-era fighter airplane, which he eagerly flies around. However, the animator paints a mountain onto the screen, causing Daffy to crash into it (offscreen). Daffy leaps to safety with a parachute, which the animator changes into an anvil. Daffy crashes to the ground and in a dazed phase, recites "The Village Blacksmith", while he hammers the anvil which is repainted as an artillery shell, blowing up Daffy ("Under a spreading chestnut tree, The village smithy stands; The smith, a mighty man is he, with large and sinewy (boom) ..hands").

In 1994 it was voted #2 of The 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time by members of the animation field, and was included on Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 1. It was so popular that a Nintendo DS game was made after it.
According to director Chuck Jones, this film demonstrated for the first time that animation can create characters with a recognizable personality, independent of their appearance, milieu, or voice. Although in the end, the animator is revealed to be Daffy's friend and rival Bugs Bunny (who famously declares "Ain't I a stinker?"), according to Jones the ending is just for comedic value: Jones (the director) is speaking to the audience directly, asking "Who is Daffy Duck anyway? Would you recognize him if I did this to him? What if he didn't live in the woods? Didn't live anywhere? What if he had no voice? No face? What if he wasn't even a duck anymore?" In all cases, it is obvious that Daffy is still Daffy; not all cartoon characters can claim such distinctive personality.
Duck Amuck is included in the compilation film The Bugs Bunny-Road Runner Movie, along with other favorite Chuck Jones cartoons including What's Opera, Doc?
Mel Blanc performed the voices. It was directed by Chuck Jones with a story by Michael Maltese. The film contains many examples of self-referential humor, breaking the fourth wall.
In 1999 the film was deemed "culturally significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. This was the second of three animated shorts by Jones to receive this honor (the others are 1957's What's Opera, Doc? and 1955's One Froggy Evening). Jones has the distinction of being the only director (as of 2006) with three animated shorts in the registry.
The cartoon's plot was essentially replicated in one of Jones' later cartoons, Rabbit Rampage (1955), in which Bugs Bunny turns out to be the victim of the silly animator (Elmer Fudd). A similar plot was also included in an episode of Baby Looney Tunes, only Bugs was the victim, Daffy was the animator, and it was made on a computer instead of a pencil and paper.
In Looney Tunes Comics Issue #94, Bugs Bunny gets his back at Daffy Duck by making him the victim, in switching various movie roles, from Duck Twacy in "Who Killed Daffy Duck," a video game character, and a talk show host, and they always wound up with Daffy starring in Moby Dick (the story's running gag). After this, Bugs comments, "Eh, dis guy needs a new agent."
Synopsis
Daffy first appears on-screen dressed as a musketeer who as he carries on across the screen, he finds there is no scenery and whispers to the animator to draw scenery ("Hey. Psst! Whoever's in charge here? The scenery? Where's the scenery?"). However, the animator keeps painting different backgrounds, prompting Daffy to change his attire to suit the scene. Eventually, he finds himself with no scenery again and starts to rant at the animator, only to be erased with a pencil rubber.
He is redrawn dressed as a cowboy armed with a guitar, but no sound comes from the guitar when he plays to which Daffy holds up a sign that says "sound please". The animator adds in obscure sound effects for the guitar (like a gun being fired), and later Daffy when he tries shouting at the animator. Daffy flips out and throws a tantrum, finally ending it by screaming "And I've never been so humiliated in all my life!"
More scenery is drawn at Daffy's request ("Look, Mac. Just what's going on around here? Let's get organised, hmm? How about some scenery?"), but all it turns out to be is a crudely drawn cityscape. When Daffy asks for it to be in color ("now, how about some color, stupid?"), he is instead colored in a wacky color scheme of spots and stripes ("Not me, you slop artist!!"). He is erased ("Well? Where's the rest of me?") and redrawn as a bizarre creature with a flower-shaped head, an amphibian body and a flagpole for a tail; the flag features a picture of a rod and reel (hence a reference to the word "screwball"). Daffy sees his reflection in a mirror, freaks out and scolds the animator ("EEK! You know better than that!").
Daffy is erased yet again and redrawn as a sailor, complete with sailor suit and sailor hat. Daffy comments on how he always wished to do a sea epic ("Hmm. Sea picture, eh? I always wanted to do a sea epic. Now, Mr. Rembrandt, if you would knidly oblige with a little appropriate scenery."). However, the animator paints an island with palm trees and a volcano, and an ocean which Daffy promptly falls into after singing a little sea song ("over the see, lets go men, we ship right of, we ship right of...again?" *splash*). He appears on the faraway island and calls for the animator give him a close-up, but the animator mocks him with a small close-up ("This is a close-up? (pause) A close-up, ya jerk! A CLOSE-UP!") and then a huge zooming close-up that goes up to his eyes.
Daffy starts complaining ("Now look, buster. Let's have an understanding..") but he is suddenly bombarded by a blob of black ink (standing directly under it). The animator draws a stick for him to support it, but it soon breaks and Daffy fights this ink, until it gets all over him. He screams and rips the ink apart. Catching his breath, he demands "Let's get this picture started!", prompting an iris-out to black and a "The End" title card. Daffy pushes the ending scene aside and apologizes to the audience for the problems and starts dancing. The film suddenly slips out of frame, creating two Daffys who get into a fight. One is erased, leaving the other to punch into empty air.
Daffy is suddenly drawn into a World War II-era fighter airplane, which he eagerly flies around. However, the animator paints a mountain onto the screen, causing Daffy to crash into it (offscreen). Daffy leaps to safety with a parachute, which the animator changes into an anvil. Daffy crashes to the ground and in a dazed phase, recites "The Village Blacksmith", while he hammers the anvil which is repainted as an artillery shell, blowing up Daffy ("Under a spreading chestnut tree, The village smithy stands; The smith, a mighty man is he, with large and sinewy (boom) ..hands").

April 17th, Tencent QQ2009 officially released the final version (Simplified Chinese version).
